Controls Technician I

Controls Technician I

Position Purpose:

This position will be responsible for supporting the installation, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and repair of building automation and controls systems while providing top-tier customer service.  The Controls Technician I will work closely with Project Managers, Controls Technicians, Engineers, and other Operations team members to complete field activities safely, accurately, and in accordance with project requirements. This position will assist with control device installation, system checkout, troubleshooting, commissioning, documentation, and other project activities while developing the technical knowledge and field experience necessary to take on increasing responsibility.  In order to perform your responsibilities, you will utilize and continue to develop your knowledge of HVAC systems, control devices, computer operations, electronics, mechanical and electrical systems, direct digital controls, airflow and hydronic systems, IT networking, analytics, and building controls technologies.  This role requires a strong willingness to learn, effective communication, attention to detail, safe work practices, and the ability to work collaboratively with the Controls team to support successful project execution and customer satisfaction.  As part of the Varitec team, expectations are that you will be a team player that puts the companies’ internal and external customers first.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide front line technical and repair support through effective communication with Varitec Controls and Service Solutions team.
  • Perform installation, startup, point-to-point checkout, commissioning, and basic troubleshooting of building automation and HVAC control systems under the direction of Project Management and experienced Controls team members.
  • Coordinate with electrical and controls subcontractors during installation and point-to-point checkout to verify field devices, wiring, terminations, addressing, and system operation meet project requirements.
  • Verify proper operation of sensors, actuators, controllers, and other control devices and identify or communicate deficiencies requiring correction.
  • Assist with loading, configuring, testing, and commissioning controllers and building automation system components using established company standards and procedures.
  • Read and interpret controls drawings, mechanical plans, wiring diagrams, sequences of operation, equipment submittals, and other project documentation necessary to complete assigned field work.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, low-voltage, communication, and controls issues and escalate more complex technical problems to the appropriate team member when necessary.
  • Communicate and coordinate with Project Managers, Controls Engineers, Software Engineers, other Controls Technicians, subcontractors, and field personnel to support successful project execution.
  • Document field changes, deficiencies, commissioning results, and completed work, and provide accurate information for as-built drawings, project records, punch lists, and project billing.
  • Maintain clear communication with Project Management regarding job progress, completed work, outstanding issues, material needs, subcontractor concerns, and potential impacts to project schedule.
  • Assist with material verification, device installation, equipment startup, and other field activities necessary to keep assigned projects progressing.
  • Participate in company-provided and self-directed training to develop knowledge of HVAC systems, DDC controls, networking, programming, commissioning, and Varitec-supported building automation platforms.
  • Follow all company and jobsite safety standards and complete required safety training, maintaining a high degree of regard for employee, subcontractor, and customer safety at all times.
  • Work collaboratively with the Operations team to complete assigned work safely, accurately, efficiently, and within established project schedules and budgeted labor hours.
  • Respond professionally and in a timely manner to internal and external customer needs and represent Varitec with courtesy, professionalism, and respect in all interactions.

 

Competency and Experience:

  • Maintain a satisfactory driving record which, per Varitec’s vehicle policy, allows the individual to drive a company vehicle.
  • Proficiency in Windows applications primarily Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge of refrigeration machinery, tools and their application.
  • Skilled in reading, analyzing, and interpreting written instructions and construction project documents.  
  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts, such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including gathering information, establishing facts, and drawing sound conclusions.  
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the capacity to evaluate available information and respond in a timely manner.  
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the capacity to plan and sequence work effectively.  
  • Effective verbal communication skills in one-on-one and small-group settings.  
  • Strong written communication skills with attention to clarity, grammar, and professionalism.  
  • Comfortable managing competing priorities and simultaneous deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills.

 

Education and Certification:

  • Associates degree in HVAC or similar field or combination of education and experience.
  • Other technical experience such as military, on the job training programs, etc. may meet this requirement as determined by local management.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain OSHA safety training, along with managing a safe workforce and safety policies.
