The Wiley Building: Innovative HVAC Solutions for Multi-Use Facilities

EPX General Contractors, a leading construction firm, recently completed The Wiley Building project in El Paso, Texas. This project showcases their expertise in delivering versatile, high-performance HVAC solutions for multi-use facilities.

Application

The primary focus of the project was to implement efficient HVAC systems that could address the diverse needs of various occupants, including a restaurant and medical offices. The design incorporated state-of-the-art cooling, fresh air supply, and humidity control systems, resulting in optimized energy efficiency, improved thermal comfort, and enhanced indoor air quality.

Design & Product Solutions

The project’s success can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of EPX General Contractors, Trinity Consulting, and Varitec Solutions. Chris Malooly from EPX served as both owner and general contractor, while Fred Gatewood from Trinity Consulting oversaw the MEP design. Varitec Solutions played a crucial role throughout the project, leveraging their expertise in applied systems and strong industry relationships.

The design incorporated Daikin Applied Rebel units for efficient cooling, AAON DOAS units for fresh air supply, and Dristeem humidifiers for precise humidity control in medical spaces. This comprehensive approach ensures optimal comfort and air quality while maximizing energy efficiency across the building’s diverse environments.

Key Products and Their Roles

Several carefully selected products were essential to achieving the desired performance and efficiency:

  • Daikin Applied Rebel Units: Provide efficient cooling with variable-speed inverter compressors and electronic expansion valves.
  • AAON DOAS Units: Supply fresh air with energy-efficient airflow and high static pressure capabilities.
  • Dristeem Humidifiers: Offer precise humidity control and energy efficiency for medical offices and labs.

Installation Challenges and Solutions

The team successfully addressed challenges such as using a large crane to lift equipment to upper floors and adapting to the addition of a fifth floor during the project. These issues were resolved through careful planning and execution.

Performance and Efficiency

Initial findings indicate that the installed systems are performing excellently, with almost zero issues reported after installation. The project demonstrates EPX General Contractors’ expertise in delivering innovative HVAC solutions for complex, multi-use facilities and highlights the importance of collaboration and careful product selection in achieving superior energy efficiency and occupant comfort across diverse environments.
