Application Engineer
| Purpose of the Position |
Support Outside Sales Engineers in the multi-level selling process to successfully design, quote, secure, and process orders for large capital HVAC equipment. This role contributes through detailed project take-offs, equipment design and selection, estimating, submittal preparation, order entry, and warranty administration.
This is a developmental engineering role designed to equip Application Engineers with the skills, tools, and experience required to ultimately manage project responsibilities more independently. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed to support Varitec’s ongoing business operations.
| Essential Functions |
Under limited supervision of Outside Sales Engineers and more experienced Application Engineers, the Application Engineer I performs the following functions:
- Support Outside Sales Engineers by performing project take-offs, equipment design and selection, cost estimates, and proposal preparation.
- Prepare submittals, order entry documentation, and warranty or startup materials as required.
- Develop a working understanding of company software systems, product lines, and internal workflows used in the HVAC design and procurement process.
- Participate in team meetings and project reviews to ensure accuracy, consistency, and alignment with customer and manufacturer expectations.
- Assist in reviewing plans, specifications, and schedules to ensure correct application and compliance with design intent.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Controls, Air Distribution, Parts, and ECAD teams to ensure coordinated and accurate project delivery.
- Communicate professionally with customers, contractors, and internal staff through clear, timely, and accurate correspondence.
- Organize and maintain accurate records of selections, proposals, and order documentation to support project continuity and workflow efficiency.
- Seek guidance from Outside Sales Engineers and other Application Engineers while proactively developing problem-solving skills and learning new tools and systems.
- Perform other duties or special projects as assigned by management to support sales operations, customer satisfaction, and company objectives.
| Competency and Experience |
The Application Engineer I demonstrates the following competencies:
- Demonstrates proficiency in fundamental manufacturer representative software tools (Daikin City, Griswold, Dynamics, etc.) relevant to the role.
- Works under guidance in more applied tools (DriSteem, Daikin Applied – Fan Coils/AHUs/WSHP, WebXpress, Armstrong Adept, Stulz CyberSelect, etc.).
- Executes internal processes effectively while learning and internalizing company standards and guidelines.
- Collaborates well with team members and demonstrates a strong willingness to learn.
- Meets assigned timelines with appropriate support and oversight.
- Communicates clearly and professionally with internal and external stakeholders via timely email, phone calls, and other professional communication channels as needed.
- Builds foundational knowledge of Varitec’s product lines, services, and system applications.
- Seeks and applies constructive feedback to improve performance.
- Shows initiative in learning new skills and technologies while building effective problem-solving abilities.
Growth Path Expectation:
Application Engineer I employees who demonstrate proficiency in these competencies may become eligible for advancement to Application Engineer II within approximately 12-24 months dependent on depending on ability, competency attainment, and business needs.
| Supervisory Responsibilities |
The position does not include direct supervisory responsibilities.
| Education and Certification |
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university in a STEM-related field (Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline) is highly preferred.
- Up to three years of relevant HVAC or engineering industry experience may substitute for a formal engineering degree.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and general computer literacy are required.
- Previous experience in HVAC design, construction, or equipment sales is beneficial but not required.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for occasional factory or site visits.
| Work Environment |
This role primarily operates in a professional office environment requiring routine use of standard office equipment. Regular interaction with customers, contractors, and team members is expected.
Occasional travel to factory training or active construction sites (typically 5–10% annually) may be required. When visiting sites, exposure to outdoor weather conditions or uneven terrain may occur, and all required PPE and safety protocols must be followed. No direct hands-on engagement with construction or mechanical equipment is expected.
| Physical Demands |
Office duties require extended periods of sitting and keyboard use as well as participation in virtual and in-person meetings. Site visits may require walking, bending, reaching, climbing stairs or ladders, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
| Position Type and Expected Hours of Work |
Standard office business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. apply. Occasional additional hours may be necessary to meet deadlines. Travel is typically short-duration (2–5 days per trip).
