Application Engineer - El Paso
Purpose of this position
This position exists to allow Outside Salesperson more time to conduct the multi-level selling efforts required to successfully procure orders for large capital HVAC equipment. The Project Manager’s role is support these efforts by performing support functions such as take-offs equipment design and selection, estimates, submittals, order entry /expediting and warranty administration as well as any other duties that may become apparent during the course of Varitec business activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as a representative of Varitec, primarily via telephone, but occasionally in person displaying courtesy, tact, professionalism and discretion in all interactions with fellow employees and the company’s clientele.
Anticipate customer & project needs as they relate to the need for documents, certifications and other information. - Utilize existing software, forms, systems and office equipment to effectively act as a project manager for each job assigned. These duties include, but are not limited to:
Timely response to all customer inquiries. - Maintain a working knowledge of products and manufacturers represented by Varitec. This includes the maintenance of manufacturer literature and pricing.
- Pricing and preparation of proposal from a set of construction documents, plans & specs, including a review of the project bid form and an understanding of its impact on Varitec’s Proposal.
- Preparation of Prior Approval Requests for architect and/or engineer review.
- Equipment selection and pricing.
- Participation in project turnover meetings where critical milestones are established and commitments made to customers by Salesperson are communicated. Communication with salesman whenever events may impact project schedule.
- Organize and keep current project files. Prepare Job Billing Summary. Coordinate with accounting when the timing of a billing is critical.
- Preparation of accurate equipment submittals.
- Order entry.
- Become familiar enough with warehouse stock software (Dynamics) so as to place a stock order.
- Coordination of equipment start up. This involves coordination with the mechanical, the general & often the owner. It also requires communication with Varitec start up personnel to identify critical tasks leading to start up. All start up completion and punch list resolution must be documented and confirmed in writing to customer.
- Coordination of warranty activities by interfacing with Varitec service and warranty coordinators, equipment Salesperson and with appropriate factories.
- Maintain a current shipping schedule & track submittals.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Computer skills and proficiency with manufactures software programs, Windows applications including Word, Excel, Power Point
- Excellent organization skills, accuracy, dependable work habits and good communication skills
- Become familiar with factory personnel, product, model numbers, descriptions, etc.
- Participate in training activities.
- Provide timely, accurate and courteous service to customers and co-workers requests.
- Participate in departmental meetings, the refinement of existing systems, and development of new systems.
- Provide insight, suggestions and enhancements to all current responsibilities.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The position does not have any direct supervisor responsibilities of other employees.
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree preferred
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in construction industry.
- Familiarity with construction industry processes, such as design hierarchy vs. construction hierarchy.
- Proficiency with Windows applications primarily Word, Excel, Power Point.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD preferred
- Excellent organization skills, accuracy, dependable work habits and good communication skills.

Extent of Public Contact
Public contact includes extensive and frequent interaction with Varitec customers and co-workers as well as with the manufacturers’ personnel. It is one of the key elements of the position.
Working Conditions and Environment
There may be occasional traveling requirements associated with this position, to various locations for factory training. Most of these will involve overnight stays, and generally last anywhere from 2 to 5 days. Normal office hours are from 8:00am to 5:00pm. However, all employees in sales and sales support functions are expected to have a “get the job done” mentality. This will involve additional time as necessary to insure that project deadlines are met as required. It can be expected that most weeks will require more than 40 work hours.
