Outside Sales Engineer
Purpose of this position
This position conducts multi-level selling efforts required to successfully produce orders for large capital HVAC equipment. These efforts include calling on mechanical and general contractors, mechanical engineering consultants, and building owners, developing professional and personal relationships with key personnel at these firms, and utilizing these relationships to produce profitable business for Varitec.
Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as a representative of Varitec, at all times displaying courtesy, tact, professionalism and discretion in all interactions with fellow employees and the company’s clientele.
Utilize highly developed interpersonal, professional, and technical skills to effectively perform the duties of this position. These duties include, but are not limited to:
- Working closely with assigned accounts (Professional Design and Construction) to develop mechanical system design concepts while simultaneously positioning Varitec for success during the project bidding, award and construction processes.
- Development of relationships with key personnel at these accounts.
- Develop relationships with factory personnel.
- Organize and host factory visitors and seminars
- Perform duties and tasks as related to this position as requested by clients.
- Develop and conduct presentations to groups of clients.
- Timely response to all customer inquiries.
- Maintain a working knowledge of assigned product and manufacturer. This includes the maintenance of manufacturer literature and pricing.
- Pricing and preparation of proposals from a set of construction documents, plans & specs, including a review of the project bid form and an understanding of its impact on Varitec’s Proposal.
- Equipment selection & pricing.
- Participation in project coordination meetings where critical milestones are established and commitments made to customers are communicated to the project team.
- Prompt communication with the project team regarding events that may impact project schedules.
- Become familiar with, product, model numbers, descriptions, etc.
- Maintain a proactive attitude towards self-improvement and activities to support the efforts of all Varitec team members.
- Conduct training of inside and outside sales team as delegated by the Managing Partners.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. This position does however, rely on the efforts and effectiveness of the inside sales support team to perform its duties.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (preferred) or other engineering discipline
- Experience in the Commercial HVAC industry, direct sales or customer service
- Familiarity with construction industry processes is preferred
- Proficiency with Windows applications primarily Word, Excel, Power Point, and ability to learn manufacturer specific design and pricing software. Auto CAD experience is a plus

- Decision Making: making judgments after analysis of available information and responding with a timely decision

- Ability to speak articulately one-on-one or to small and medium sized groups
- Ability to compose articulate and grammatically correct and effective written communication
- Ability to perform under difficult conditions, such as simultaneous deadlines
- Ability to handle conflict
Extent of Public Contact
Public contact includes extensive and constant interaction with Varitec customers and co-workers as well as manufactures’ personnel.
Working Conditions and Environment
Normal office hours are from 8:00am to 5:00pm. However, all employees in sales and sales support functions are expected to have a “get the job done” mentality. This will involve additional time as necessary to insure that project deadlines are met as required. It can be expected that most weeks will require more than 40 work hours.
There may be occasional traveling requirements associated with this position to various locations for factory training and customer events. Most of these will involve overnight stays, and generally last anywhere from 2 to 5 days.
