Controls Technician II
Purpose of the Position |
As part of the Varitec Controls and Service Solutions LLC team, expectations are that you will be a team player that puts the companies’ internal and external customers first. This position will be performing installation and/or commissioning, troubleshooting, repairing, and programming building automation control systems while providing top-tier customer service for all internal and external customers. In order to perform your tasks, you will utilize your knowledge of HVAC Systems, control devices, computer operations, electronics, mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, direct digital controls, airflow, hydronic systems, IT networking, analytics and building controls technologies.
Essential Functions |
- Serve as a representative of VCSS, primarily in person or on the telephone, displaying courtesy, tact, professionalism and discretion in all interactions with fellow employees and the company’s clientele.
- Provide front line technical and repair support through effective communication with Varitec Controls and Service Solutions team.
- Work as a team with our Operations Team to fulfill customer needs with courtesy and in a timely manner.
- Timely response to all customer requests, internal/external.
- High Level HVAC Control systems knowledge, troubleshooting, installation, start-up, and commissioning as it is related to mechanical, electrical, and low voltage controls components.
- Ability to execute all project field work with little to no supervision/assistance, at a high level of quality, with budgeted time in mind.
- Mentoring other Technicians in all facets of Project Execution.
- Ability to review Mech plans and controls submittals to detect potential issues with devices, wiring or sequence of operations.
- Ability to troubleshoot and modify Controls programming as needed to complete project start-up.
- Demonstrated ability to lead customer training sessions for completed projects.
- Participate and lead in company training classes as well as personally initiated training to ensure the highest level of knowledge.
- Documenting changes and provides information for as-built documentation and proper project billings.
- Following all safety standards and attends/completes required safety training. High degree of regard to employee and subcontractor safety always.
- Keeping management and project management informed of job progress and any foreseen or possible issues that might arise.
- Following and managing processes and procedures in a timely manner, without the need to be reminded; Example: Email, Teams, Trello, Bidtracer, Project Folder Management, labor logs and personal expense submission.
Competency and Experience |
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the construction industry.
- Maintain a satisfactory driving record which, per VCSS’s vehicle policy, allows the individual to drive a company vehicle.
- Ability to use Windows applications primarily Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Working knowledge of refrigeration machinery, tools and their application.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret written instructions and construction project documents as they apply to aforementioned duties and responsibilities.
- Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts, such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
- Ability to define problems, gather data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to make judgments after analysis of available information and respond with a timely decision.
- Ability to plan work and sequence priorities.
- Ability to speak articulately one-on-one or to small groups.
- Ability to compose articulate and grammatically correct written communication.
- Ability to perform under difficult conditions, such as simultaneous deadlines.
- Ability to handle conflict.
Supervisory Responsibilities |
This position does not have any direct supervisor responsibilities of other employees.
Education and Certification |
- Bachelor’s degree in HVAC or similar field or combination of education and experience.
- Other technical experience such as military, on the job training programs, etc. may meet this requirement as determined by local management.
- Must have or be willing to obtain OSHA safety training, along with managing a safe workforce and safety policies.
Work Environment |
- This position may require working in extremely hot or cold weather conditions. Furthermore, there may be noisy or potentially hazardous conditions that require the use of PPE.
- There will be significant and daily local travel to customer sites to perform the duties of this position. In addition occasional overnight travel may be required for distant customer sites. Also, from time to time, overnight travel may be required for training at various manufacturers, generally lasting anywhere from 2 to 5 days.
Physical Demands |
- Be able to lift and carry ladders, drawings, personal computers, material, etc.
- Be able to spend significant time standing and walking on construction sites.
- Be able to climb several flights of stairs or ladders throughout a typical day on a construction site.
- Be physically able to kneel, stoop and crawl.
- Be able to drive for extended periods of time.
