Session 1 Synopsis & Bio
Topic Synopsis:
At VCSS we believe that healthy and sustainable building environments should be easy and accessible to everyone.
By empowering customers with truly open, non-proprietary, single-source building solutions we give them the tools to interact, optimize and service their own systems without locking them in with a single vendor.
Presenter’s Bio
Dan Beyer, a Chicago Native has worked in the Controls industry for over twenty-four years, over ten of which have been in Arizona. He earned his certificate in HVAC & Refrigeration from Universal Technical Institute, a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, and his MBA from Keller Graduate School. His experience working in various roles, from Technician to now President of VCSS, has instilled skills in how to lead, manage, engineer, and help customers with creating building solutions within all types of vertical markets.
As President, his mission is to provide the industry with Truly Open Equipment & Controls Solutions. Dan’s mission at VCSS is to empower customers with non-proprietary, single-source, building solutions. This is accomplished by giving owners the tools to interact, optimize and service their own systems without locking them in with a single vendor.
Life Safety: Fire Smoke Dampers & Fire Dampers
Topic Synopsis:
What not to do when specifying and installing life safety dampers! An overview of life safety dampers. When they are required, how to specify them, and recommendations on installing & inspecting them.
Presenter’s Bio
Ghassan ElKhatib is a Regional Sales Manager for Ruskin supporting Varitec with the Ruskin products; air control solutions; fire/smoke/control dampers, air measuring stations, louvers, noise control, and ERVs. Ghassan received a bachelor’s degree in Architecture Engineering with emphasis in HVAC from the University of Kansas. He was a consulting mechanical engineer for 14 years with past PE Registrations in (35) States. He has experience with a broad spectrum of mechanical systems. Prior to joining Ruskin, Ghassan served as Business Development Manager for a leading manufacturer of Under Floor Air Distribution (UFAD) products for 11 years.
Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pumps
Topic Synopsis:
This presentation will address three of the most popular topics currently discussed within our industry.
We will briefly discuss two newish yet extremely prevalent terms – Decarbonization and Electrification. How is our industry reacting to new standards and legislation? What are some of the challenges?
For the past two years, every manufacturer has had to deal with one of the most critical components of our equipment – Refrigerants. What is AAON’s approach to new refrigerants? How is AAON responding?
Last, we will discuss AAON’s newest ASHP option – AAON’s Zero Degree Cold Climate Air-Source Heat Pumps. We will focus on AAON’s packaged rooftop units and variable speed compressors. Topics will include relative performance, sizing considerations, and strategies for selecting ASHPs to meet competing application requirements.
Presenter’s Bio
Ryan Merritt is an Application Engineer with AAON. His primary responsibilities include pre-sale technical support for AAON’s manufacturer’s representative network. Ryan holds a BSME from The University of Tulsa and is a member of ASHRAE. Prior to joining AAON, Ryan worked for a manufacturers’ representative and factory OEM in various outside technical sales roles for over 8 years.

Airflow Pressurization: Realizing Safety and Energy Goals in High-Performance Labs
Topic Synopsis:
Designing smart high-performance laboratory ventilation strategies for safe working environments is a challenge. For decades, stringent design standards have driven high levels of energy consumption for the most critical spaces. Today’s high-performance lab standards add complexity and confusion to the design process. We will show you how to utilize precision measurement and cutting-edge design to meet safety requirements while reducing energy demand. We will also cover the top 5 common mistakes in lab design.
